I HAD A chance to watch UFC 160 on delay late Saturday night and got through almost spoiler free. Unfortunately, I noticed that the show was over by around 9pm, so I figured at least a couple of fights ended quickly. I assumed Velsaquez vs. Bigfoot was one of those fights, and in this case assuming made a correct prognosticator out of me (and probably you), contrary to conventional wisdom on assumptions.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Particular standouts for me were the grappling clinic put on by Khabib Nurmagomedov against Abel Trujillo, the boyyoiyoiyoing knockout of Gray Maynard by TJ Grant, and the tense as hell battle between the titan JDS and the juggernaut Mark Hunt.
RE: Nurmagomedov vs. Trujillo, grappling doesn’t get enough love in the contemporary world of MMA, but in my day sonny, THAT’S WHAT NHB WAS ALL ABOUT, so I loved watching Trujillo get tossed around like a rag doll and the frustration that ensued.
RE: Maynard being KOed by Grant, this one’s pretty self-explanatory. Decisive knock out victory as we continue to watch Grant move up in the division on his way now to a title match with Ben Henderson. Good times.
RE: JDS vs. Hunt, this was a straight up slobberknocker. You knew JDS was going to win, but Hunt has been a fun Rocky story, and there’s nothing like watching a striking match between two big dudes who can end the fight at any time. Hunt’s got a hell of a chin, but it was inevitable that he’d be outclassed by JDS in the end.
And, speaking of outclassed, poor Bigfoot. Still, he’s had a good career, and no one can take away his righteous ass whooping of Alistair Overeem. He’s a good fighter, but come on, how else could this one have ended? Basically in the heavyweight division right now you’ve got Velasquez and JDS on an island and everyone else is so far below them it’s not even funny. Looking forward to the third of the trilogy between those two, BTW.
This was a great show, which is good because I’m not going to get another UFC fix for awhile. I don’t get Fuel, and UFC 161 is no buys for me. I like some of the guys on the card, but nothing stands out as 50 bucks worthy. UFC, we’ll meet again on July 4th weekend, I suppose.
p.s. Mike Tyson was all over this show, which was awesome.
p.p.s. At one point during the broadcast we were shown a shot of Lil’ Wayne who was standing next to Royce Gracie. The camera made sure to keep Gracie out of the shot and the announcers no-sold his presence. That was not awesome.
